ACCCN Webinar on Demand 'First Nations Youth Suicide Mortality Rates and Connection to Culture''

This webinar recording is presented by Mandy Gibson, Researcher/Psychologist with the Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention Griffith University, and discusses Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Youth Suicide Mortality Rates and Connection to Culture.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people have consistently been overrepresented in Qld's suicide mortality figures for decades. Yet in that time, there has been little evidence of successful preventative approaches. This webinar will share the results from a study linking First Nations community's cultural data with geographic variations in suicide mortality in order to identify protective effects. The implication for suicide prevention policy and practice will also be discussed.

Mandy is a Researcher with the Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention at Griffith University, and a Psychologist with over 15 years' experience working in youth mental health and suicide prevention across community out-patient, emergency department, and school linkage settings. Her research focusses on cultural strengths and protective factors against suicide for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people to build the evidence of effective prevention programs.
