Breathing Across the Lifespan: Contemporary Respiratory Support in Critical Care

Respiratory support is becoming increasingly complex across critical and acute care. From HFNC and NIV through to advanced ventilation strategies, proning and ECMO, nurses are being asked to recognise deterioration earlier, troubleshoot confidently and support patients safely through every stage of respiratory failure and recovery.

ACCCN's Respiratory & Ventilation Seminar brings together healthcare professionals from across Western Australia for a full day of practical, evidence-informed education designed to strengthen your respiratory assessment, decision-making and bedside practice. 

Primarily developed for critical care and acute care nurses, the seminar is open to all nursing staff and healthcare workers with an interest in respiratory support and ventilation, including clinicians working across ICU, HDU, emergency, acute medical and surgical wards, paediatrics, education and specialist respiratory services.

Throughout the day, you'll build your understanding of current and emerging trends in respiratory care and translate that knowledge into practical skills you can take back to the bedside. 

The program will cover:

• Current and emerging trends in respiratory support across the lifespan
• Lung-protective ventilation strategies and their application in clinical practice
• Weaning, liberation from ventilation and supporting recovery
• VV ECMO nursing and the role of the bedside clinician in caring for patients receiving advanced respiratory support
• Adult ventilation strategies, including hands-on troubleshooting and best-practice approaches
• Practical proning techniques and considerations for safe patient care
• Paediatric respiratory failure and respiratory support
• Human factors, teamwork and safety in high-risk respiratory care
• The patient perspective, with a lived-experience session exploring respiratory critical illness and recovery

A strong practical focus runs throughout the seminar, with plenary presentations, case-based learning and multiple interactive workshops giving delegates the opportunity to work through real clinical scenarios and build confidence with respiratory technologies and techniques.

The multidisciplinary faculty includes respiratory physicians, intensivists, clinical technologists, nurse educators and clinicians working across major WA hospitals. This range of perspectives provides a practical view of how respiratory care is being delivered across different settings and patient populations.

Alongside the clinical program, delegates will have opportunities to network with colleagues from across WA and connect with industry partners. The seminar is fully catered, eligible for 8 CPD hours, and there will also be prizes available throughout the event.
