Clinical Excellence Award
The Australian College of Critical Care Nurses Ltd (ACCCN)
The Australian College of Critical Care Nurses (ACCCN), in conjunction with Griffith University, has established an award that will acknowledge the contribution of outstanding critical care nurse clinicians. This award seeks to recognise clinical excellence in critical care nursing practice as nominated by patients or colleagues. The recipient receives $3000 and a certificate.
Key Dates
- Nominations Open: 1 February – 16 March every year.
- Applications must be submitted before 11:59pm (AEST) on 16 March of the relevant year
- Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted

Nomination Criteria
a) The nominated nurse must be a member of ACCCN.
b) The nominated nurse is recognised by colleagues and patients as an outstanding critical care nurse who demonstrates a high-level commitment to their profession & role.
c) The nominated nurse demonstrates excellence in practice across the four domains of the ACCCN practice standards:
Professional practice:
- Demonstrates excellence in relation to the professional, legal and ethical responsibilities of critical care, protecting the rights of patients and their families through accountability for their own practice and the ability to interpret unfamiliar legal and/or ethical situations.
Provision and Coordination of care:
- Demonstrates excellence in nursing practices that care for the physiological, psychological, emotional and spiritual needs of the patient and family, establishing and sustaining a holistic nurse-patient-family relationship that optimises the wellbeing of the patient and family.
Critical thinking and analysis:
- Demonstrates excellence in application of specialised knowledge, clinical decision-making, advanced patient assessment skills and research evidence to provide specialised, evidence-based nursing care.
Collaboration and leadership:
- Demonstrates excellence in the professional development of self and others, through participation and engagement in both formal and informal leadership, education roles and activities.
All nominations will be reviewed by a panel convened by the Board of Directors of ACCCN. The award will be based only on the information supplied in the nomination form. Nominating persons may be contacted by an ACCCN representative to clarify information contained in the nomination form. The decision of the panel will be final.
The ACCCN and Griffith University Clinical Excellence Award for Critical Care Nursing will be announced during the ANZICS/ACCCN Annual Scientific Meeting on Intensive Care.
