Paediatric ALS Program Overview

NATIONAL PAEDIATRIC ALS CERTIFICATION: 2 DAY PROGRAM
ACCCN offers a two-day Paediatric Advanced Life Support program to healthcare professionals in the provision of Paediatric Basic and Advanced Life Support in a critical care clinical setting. The program content runs over two days with assessment for certification for both BLS and ALS on the second day. The course is based on the latest Australian Resuscitation Council Statements on Basic and Advanced Life Support and current ANZCOR guidelines, incorporating theoretical lectures, clinical skill stations and simulation scenarios.
Registration includes a program manual and e-learning material.
Program content includes:
- Priorities of care
- Paediatric Basic Life Support algorithm and principles
- Paediatric Advanced Life Support algorithm and principles
- Advanced airway management including laryngeal mask airway insertion
- Electrical therapy – manual defibrillation, synchronised cardioversion, external pacing
- Pharmacology including intraosseous cannulation
- Post resuscitation care
- Team roles
- Team communication and crisis resource management
- Legal and ethical considerations
The course assumes a level of familiarity with ALS practices and builds on these to develop the participant into an effective ALS team leader. It is also suitable for experienced Adult ALS trained healthcare professionals requiring paediatric ALS Certification.
Nursing Staff may claim up to 16 CPD hours (including 12 hours program contact and four hours self-directed learning).
Medical staff may be accredited a different allocation of hours based on the accreditation with their medical college CPD home.
Annual recertification and frequent review of ALS practice in line with ANZCOR guidelines is recommended.
NATIONAL PAEDIATRIC ALS RECERTIFICATION: 1 DAY PROGRAM
ACCCN recommends annual recertification in Advanced Life Support and offers a one-day theoretical and practical Paediatric Advanced Life Support recertification program for healthcare professionals who have previously completed a formal paediatric ALS course. At registration you will be asked to produce evidence of your current ALS certification to assure that recertification is appropriate.
Based on the latest Australian Resuscitation Council Statements on Basic and Advanced Life Support and current ANZCOR guidelines, the morning is a review of paediatric ALS content with the opportunity to apply those concepts in practice scenarios. The theoretical and practical assessment for recertification will follow in the afternoon.

- Airway management and electrical therapy skill stations
- Practice scenarios in team roles
