Defining Best Practice for Very Old Patients with Frailty following Unplanned Intensive Care Admission

Help Shape Best Practice Care for Very Old ICU Patients – Participate in a National Delphi Study

Very old patients (≥80 years) are an increasingly common and complex population within our ICUs. Yet, there remains significant variability in how we approach ICU admission, treatment limitation, and the use of time-limited trials of care. This uncertainty can impact patient outcomes, decision-making, and consistency of care across services.

We are inviting ACCCN members to contribute to a national, multidisciplinary Delphi study aiming to establish consensus on best-practice management for very old patients following unplanned ICU admission across Australia and New Zealand.

This study brings together doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, and health leaders to define:

– When and how ICU care should be initiated in very old patients
– The role, structure, and implementation of time-limited ICU trials
– Key factors that support transparent, patient-centred decision-making

Your input will directly inform the development of a structured, consensus-based framework to guide clinical practice, reduce variability, and improve care for this vulnerable population.

Participation involves completing a short, anonymous survey, with opportunities to review and refine consensus across subsequent rounds.

Have your say and help shape the future of ICU care.
